How to Increase your Instagram Visibility

3 Simple Tips to Increase your Instagram Visibility

Carly Anderson Photography | Utah Based Photographer & Educator

Instagram is the bane of most photographer’s existence. We’re going to talk about some easy ways to increase reach, visibility, & therefore BOOKINGS. But this doesn’t just apply to photographers! These tips can be applied to any online presence to improve your instagram stats!

  1. GET ON YOUR OWN FEED

I totally get how tough this one is, but it is so important for potential clients to see your face & therefore make a connection to who they would be buying from. Connection is everything in the work you do as a photographer… you want to be able to build that trust early on. I do this by ensuring my face (sometimes it’s just me, sometimes my family too!) is in at LEAST one of every 9 posts. To go along with this, your profile picture should be a photo of you that shows your personality! Avoid logos or photos of your work. I try to do a headshot swap every month or two to keep my headshots on brand and current.

I chose this image because it was on brand color wise (neutral!) and felt like me.

2. CORRECTLY UTILIZE HASHTAGS

This one takes some research, but accounts for a large number of my bookings! Try to think how you do when you’re looking for a product & use concise, targeted words. For example if a client was looking for a Salt Lake City photographer you wouldn’t be looking at the hashtag #photographer, you’d search something more specific like #saltlakecityphotographer. It’s great to include popular locations in your area as well! You can also tag applicable feature pages to your industry. In photography a few examples of these are #lookslikefilm, #boldemotionalcolorful, #lighttexturetones. The reason I tag these is because they have large followings and share applicable work to their page for others to see.

3. FIND A CONSISTENT ROUTINE

You DO NOT have to post daily to grow, but instagram & your followers love consistency. Find a schedule that works for you & stick with it! If you don’t feel like you have enough content, go out & get creative. The more you post, the more you will grow BUT you also want to prevent social media burnout. Posting once or twice a week is much better for visibility than posting every day for a week then getting burnt out & not posting for a month. The schedule that has worked well for me is 5 stills/carousals, 2 reels, & being active on stories at least 3 days a week. Strive for consistency, not perfection.
